# Youth Journalism International Youth Journalism International (YJI) is an educational nonprofit, operating since 1994, that runs a free, fully online global newsroom for students. Members - young writers, artists, and photographers in most US states and on six continents - report real stories from their schools and communities and publish them internationally with one-on-one coaching from experienced journalists. In 2025 alone, YJI published more than 200 pieces from young people in 36 countries. This is an ongoing mentored newsroom role rather than a fixed-term internship: students join, train, and keep contributing for as long as they like. ## What You'll Do - Complete weekly orientation sessions to learn the basics of reporting and news writing - Pitch and develop your own story ideas, with editors suggesting angles and coaching you through drafts - Attend weekly Zoom newsroom meetings to discuss story ideas and current events with peers worldwide - Publish news, opinion, reviews, art, and photography for an international audience ## Who Should Apply Anyone 19 or younger may apply to be a student; there is no cost to join - "It is absolutely free." Positions are unpaid, so YJI advises against applying if you are looking for a job. Applications open on a rolling basis around orientation cohorts (they were temporarily closed at the time of checking; the newsletter announces reopenings). ## Outcomes Students build a published portfolio with professional editing mentorship, cross-cultural newsroom experience, eligibility for YJI's annual journalism contest, and a global network of peer journalists.
