# National Young Astronomer Award The National Young Astronomer Award (NYAA) is presented by the Astronomical League, the umbrella organization of U.S. amateur astronomy societies, to honor outstanding achievements by high school aged astronomers throughout the United States. Applications are due January 31 each year (postmark date). ## What You'll Do - Compile a summary of your astronomy activities — research projects, observing programs, imaging work, instrument building, or public outreach - Submit the completed application form with optional supporting exhibits of your work - Compete nationally; winners are normally announced within six weeks of the deadline ## Who Should Apply U.S. citizens ages 14-19 who are not yet enrolled in college by the application deadline; foreign students of the same age attending a U.S. secondary school also qualify. You do not need to belong to an astronomy club — independent observers and student researchers are welcome. ## Outcomes The first-place winner receives a 5-inch Explore Scientific refracting telescope and an all-expense-paid trip to the Astronomical League's national convention; the top two winners receive lifetime passes to the University of Texas McDonald Observatory, and the top three receive plaques presented at the convention. NYAA is among the most visible national recognitions available to student astronomers.
