# Genes in Space Genes in Space is a free national STEM competition that asks students to design a DNA analysis experiment addressing a real challenge of space exploration. Founded by miniPCR bio and Boeing, the contest launches its winner's experiment to the International Space Station, where astronauts actually run it. ## What You'll Do - Propose an experiment that uses molecular biology tools to answer a question in space life science - Enter as an individual or in a pair, with an adult sponsor (parent, teacher, or mentor) - Submit your proposal online — participation requires no specialized equipment and is free to enter - If selected as a finalist, refine your proposal with scientist mentors and present at a national science conference - The winning team's experiment is prepared with mentors and conducted aboard the ISS, with mentoring running through the summer and a Space Biology Camp in the fall ## Who Should Apply U.S. students in grades 7-12 attending public, private, or home schools who are curious about genetics, biotechnology, and spaceflight. No lab access is required to compete — the proposal is the entry. ## Outcomes Finalists gain scientist mentorship and national presentation experience; the winner joins a small group of students whose experiments have flown to orbit. The 2026 cycle closed April 10, 2026; the contest typically reopens each January.
