# Summer Scholars Research Program The Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University's Summer Scholars Research Program is a six-week summer internship that immerses high school students in real cancer research in Atlanta. Each summer, ten to twelve students are paired one-on-one with a Winship physician or lab-based researcher and spend the program working inside an active research environment; the 2026 session ran June 8 through July 17. ## What You'll Do - Conduct hands-on research alongside your assigned Winship physician or laboratory mentor - Attend faculty-led lectures on cancer biology and career paths in oncology - Join field trips to sites such as the Emory Proton Therapy Center and the Michael C. Carlos Museum - Take part in roundtable discussions with cancer survivors ## Who Should Apply Rising or graduating high school seniors who are at least 16 years old by the program start date. Applicants to the in-person program must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents. The program is free to attend, and students who complete all six weeks receive a $2,400 stipend funded by a gift from longtime science-education advocate Lou Glenn. ## Outcomes Scholars leave with substantive laboratory experience at an academic cancer center, mentorship from Emory researchers, exposure to clinical and research careers in oncology, and a $2,400 stipend upon completing the six-week program.
